Crowns
A cosmetic dental crown is a protective cover and is fitted over the existing structure of a broken or damaged tooth, to restore function and appearance.
Crowns are normally made from ceramic, however a variety of materials can be used including porcelain and even gold. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages which we will discuss with you during your consultation. The aim is for them to look and function like your natural teeth.
Teeth that may benefit from a crown include:
- Teeth that are chipped, cracked, or broken
- Teeth that have extensive decay and/or fillings
- For anchoring dental bridges
- Crowns boost the appearance of severely discoloured teeth
- A tooth weakened from a root canal procedure
The crowning process involves the shaping of the original tooth, then an impression is taken of the tooth. The master ceramist will then manufacture the crown in the laboratory, to the shape and colour desired, having matched it to your natural tooth shade. This may take a few weeks to process and during this time the prepared tooth will be protected with a temporary crown. The process is completed when the dentist fits the permanent crown by bonding it to the prepared tooth using special adhesive.
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is used as a permanent replacement for one or more missing teeth. The bridge spans the space between two remaining natural teeth and supports the new replacement teeth, thus ‘bridging’ the gap.
Although a bridge is a long-standing, traditional replacement for lost teeth, it does require that natural teeth are prepared as part of the treatment. Some patients who wish to avoid this, may prefer to consider other options such as dental implants. Ask us about the different options for missing teeth.
There are two main types of cosmetic bridges:
- The conventional bridge involves preparing the adjacent teeth, which can be quite destructive.
- The adhesive bridge requires minimal preparation and is usually conservative.
